NCEL Match Review #48
1st February, 2009
Mickleover Sports have stretched their lead at the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division to five points after a 2-0 home win over Parkgate.
Selby Town, who began the day in second position, had their home game with Armthorpe Welfare postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Pickering Town took advantage climbing above Selby Town with a 2-0 victory at Brodsworth Welfare.
Ricky Greening opened the scoring on 35 minutes before a Chris Batchelor penalty on the hour mark gave the Pikes the breathing space they required to see the game out.
Arnold Town remain in fourth after their match at the Eagle Valley Stadium with Maltby Main was also called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
Bridlington Town moved to within two points of them with a 2-0 win at the side in sixth place, Long Eaton United.
Mally Osindeinde and Phil Harrison struck in each half to put a five-point gap between the Seasiders and their hosts.
Dinnington Town stay seventh after losing 2-1 at home by Thackley who move within four points of them in eighth.
Martin Brissett put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot on 37 and Chris Coy doubled their advantage at the start of the second period.
Gavin Allott stayed at the top of the Premier Division League goalscorers table with his 21st of the season, a consolation penalty for the hosts with fifteen minutes to go.
The bottom two Premier Division sides were both defeated but they were just edged out 3-2 in their matches.
Eccleshill United had opened the scoring at Hallam courtesy of Marcus Edwards on five minutes, but Gavin Hunter and Rob Ward put the hosts in charge by the break and Ward grabbed their third on 75 minutes.
Andy Howland pulled one back for Eccleshill with seven minutes remaining but they could not push on for the draw.
And, the scoring followed an identical pattern for Moorlands at home to Winterton Rangers as the hosts took the lead on the half-hour through Ben Garrick but Rangers struck three times in ten second-half minutes to turn the game around.
Andy Holt scored a penalty on 68 minutes and then David Watson and Greg Archer put the visitors in control.
Adam Buckley gave Moorlands hope with their second on 80 but, like Eccleshill, they could not find that elusive third.
But, there was joy for Shirebrook Town who moved out of the bottom four, winning 4-0 at home to Hall Road Rangers.
In what was only their second victory at Langwith Road, Nathan Watson struck twice whilst Jez Mitchell and Marc Sherlock made sure of their biggest win of the season.
And, Liversedge were 3-0 winners at Nostell Miners Welfare with a first-half injury-time own goal from Matthew Denton added to by a second-period brace for Adam Clayton.
Scarborough Athletic's lead at the top of Division One is now eight points with three games in hand as their seemingly inexorable charge to the title continued.
They hosted bottom side Glasshoughton Welfare at Queensgate and, although they ran out winners, they were pushed all the way by their visitors.
Kevin Duckworth put Welfare ahead on three minutes before Ryan Blott levelled from the penalty spot.
But, Duckworth's second on the stroke of half-time meant the away side went in with the narrowest of leads.
Blott though struck twice more in the second period to take his season's tally in all competitions to 36 and Scott Phillips also found the net to give the Seadogs a 4-2 lead going into the last ten minutes.
Welfare didn't lie down and Duckworth completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot on 85 minutes before Mark Griffin made sure of a 5-3 win for Athletic late on.
Second-placed Askern Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Rainworth Miners Welfare whose injury-time equaliser from Jermain Hollis cancelled out Mark Vickerage's opener.
A Craig Rouse penalty ten minutes from time saw third placed Pontefract Collieries claim a 1-0 win at home to Hemsworth Miners Welfare.
A Steven Kenworthy brace helped AFC Emley move up to fourth in the promotion chase with a 4-1 win at home to Tadcaster Albion.
Barton Town Old Boys' challenge continued to stutter with a 2-2 draw at Staveley Miners Welfare.
Worsbrough Bridge Athletic were 2-0 winners at home to Rossington Main whilst Bottesford Town picked up three points with a 1-0 victory at Yorkshire Amateur.
And, Teversal held hosts Leeds Carnegie to a 3-3 draw whilst Appleby Frodingham and Brighouse Town shared the spoils with a 1-1 scoreline at Brumby Hall.
