NCEL Match Review #54
2nd March, 2009
Mickleover Sports' lead at the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division is in double figures for the first time as they become firm favourites to take the title.
A 4-1 win at home to Bridlington Town, coupled with dropped points by second placed Selby Town, has put them eleven points clear.
Kieran O'Connell scored twice in Sports' victory along with goals from Dave Middleditch and Karl Ashton, whilst Sam Sharman grabbed a consolation for the Seasiders.
Selby were held to a 0-0 draw by a battling Shirebrook Town side who stay in seventeenth and are desperate to stay away from the bottom two.
Third-placed Pickering Town also lost ground on the leaders as they were beaten 3-1 at home by Parkgate and are now fourteen points off the pace.
Chris Batchelor had given the Pikes a 41st minute lead from the penalty spot but a triple salvo from the visitors in the last quarter of the match saw them go away with the win.
Luke Smith and Daniel Payne struck in a minute before Ryan Johnson added the third in injury time.
Kelvin Mushambi's 76th minute goal was all that separated Long Eaton United from their visitors, Dinnington Town, in a win that moves them up to fourth.
They go above Arnold Town who were held to a goalless draw at Eagle Valley by Liversedge and Bridlington who are now sixth.
All the Premier Division's bottom three sides lost as the relegation battle continues to get even more fraught.
Basement side Eccleshill United were beaten 2-0 at home by Winterton Rangers, Any Holt and Andy Markham grabbing the goals in the first half.
Lincoln Moorlands Railway remain in the bottom two after they lost 3-0 to visitors Thackley with Chris Coy, Nicky Matthews and Scott Ellis doing the damage.
And, a Liam Hardy brace condemned Brodsworth Welfare to a 2-0 loss at home to Armthorpe Welfare.
The two other games were mid-table affairs as Hallam won 1-0 at Maltby Main and Nostell Miners Welfare were 2-0 victors at home to Hall Road Rangers.
In Division One, Scarborough Athletic continue their seemingly inexorable charge to the title but the day's headlines were made by Ant Lynam.
Rainworth Miners Welfare's new striker scored five times, including a thirteen minute first half hat-trick, as the Wrens won 7-2 at home to Tadcaster Albion.
Brendan Sweeney and Julian McDonald also struck whilst Danny Coulson and Andy Green netted for the away side in a victory that was marred, however, for Rainworth by a serious knee injury to full-back James Whitehead.
The Wrens climb to third and many think it will be between them and second-placed Askern Villa for who will join Scarborough in promotion.
Villa were 2-0 winners at home to Glasshoughton Welfare with goals in the first 17 minutes from Graeme Severn and Craig Fisher keeping them eight points clear of Rainworth but having played three games more.
Askern stay eleven points behind Scarborough who won 1-0 at home to Rossington Main with Dave Thompson making the breakthrough just before the half-hour mark.
The other sides vying for promotion all lost ground with Pontefract Collieries dropping to fourth after a 3-1 loss at home to Staveley Miners Welfare.
Craig Rouse had put them ahead on thirteen minutes before Jamie Smith levelled in injury time and Liam Morris and Lee Gregory added to Staveley's tally in the second half.
AFC Emley stay fifth after a 1-1 draw with visitors Leeds Carnegie and they needed a Joe Rossiter own goal to restore parity after Matt Chiltern put the visitors in front.
And, sixth-placed Barton Town Old Boys needed an injury-time goal from Craig Burdick to claim a 3-3 draw at home to the side just below them, Hemsworth Miners Welfare.
Bottesford Town were 3-0 winners at Appleby Frodingham to move into eighth spot.
Grimsby Borough were the biggest movers as they climbed three places to thirteenth after a 3-1 win over Brighouse Town at the Hawthorns.
And, Teversal were on the verge of victory at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic when the visitors struck twice in injury time, through Dean Shirt and Lee Garside, to take away a dramatic 3-2 win.
