NCEL Match Review #55
6th March, 2009
The KoolSport NCEL Premier Division title chase has taken a twist with the leaders losing at one of their rivals.
Mickleover Sports were beaten 4-2 at Long Eaton United who are now in third, twelve points behind but with three games in hand.
In a dramatic start, Sports took the lead on three minutes through Kieran O'Connell but were pegged back by a Kevin Mabon equaliser and then went back in front courtesy of Karl Ashton before the time on the clock had reached double figures.
But, Long Eaton took control in the second period with Alex Steadman and Lee Sutton scoring before the hour mark and Paul Gamble's 70th minute penalty ensuring the priceless victory.
Liversedge climbed two places to twelfth with a 4-1 win at home to Hall Road Rangers.
The scores were level going into the final seventeen minutes before Luke Sherman and Brook Newton gave Sedge a 3-1 advantage and then a Lee Macklin own goal killed off Rangers' challenge.
Shirebrook Town picked up their second consecutive valuable point away from home as they drew 1-1 at Dinnington Town.
Nathan Watson found the net for them at their eighth-placed hosts on 44 minutes after Gavin Allott had given Dinnington the lead.
Shirebrook, though, remain in the bottom four with a twelve-point gap between them and Hall Road in sixteenth.
Rainworth Miners Welfare's promotion hopes took a knock as they were beaten 1-0 at AFC Emley.
Steven Kenworthy grabbed the only goal of the game on 25 minutes whilst the Wrens had two men sent off late on.
The result keeps Rudy Funk's side eight points behind second-placed Askern Villa but now with two games in hand.
And, AFC Emley may feel they still could have a chance of going up as they are now one point behind Rainworth in fifth.
Ahead of Emley on goal difference are Pontefract Collieries who let a two-goal lead slip at Brighouse Town to remain fourth.
Josh Stacey got both their goals but Christopher Wdowczyk on 52 minutes and Wayne Crossley on 71 completed the comeback for the home side.
Two late goals saw seventh placed Hemsworth Miners Welfare win 3-2 at home to Yorkshire Amateur.
Damion Liddle's 81st minute penalty was his second goal of the night to level the scores before Ross Haywood grabbed the winner with two minutes remaining.
And, it was a similar feat for Staveley Miners Welfare and Teversal who came from behind to pick up away victories.
An Andy Green own goal started the comeback just after the interval for Staveley at Tadcaster Albion after Tom Deighton had given the hosts a first-half lead.
Ryan Damms and then Jamie Smith scored to move Staveley up to ninth.
And, Teversal climb four places to eleventh after their 2-1 win at Grimsby Borough.
Richard Creer's penalty had put Boro ahead on the quarter-hour mark but Dean Short and Mitchell Slawson struck in the last twenty minutes to ensure victory for the visitors.
The best performance in midweek, meanwhile, came in the Second Round of the Presidents Cup where Premier Division highfliers Pickering Town were put to the sword in a 7-1 defeat at Division One leaders, Scarborough Athletic.
In front of a crowd of 425, the Seadogs were three-up by the break with goals from Ryan Blott, Craig Hogg and David Hartas.
They stretched their lead further through Dave Thompson and Richard Medcalf before the Pikes got on the scoresheet on 71 minutes through Luke Ibbetson.
But, that was just a brief respite for Pickering, as Hogg and Blott both grabbed the second of the evening to complete the rout.
Scarborough now face more Premier Division opposition, either Hall Road Rangers or Parkgate at home, in the Semi-Finals.
