Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2021/22 #27

4th November, 2021

The Second Round of the Toolstation NCEL League Cup got underway in midweek with Rossington Main and Brigg Town ensuring they continue to fly the flag for Division One at the next stage.

They both defeated opponents from the same division with Rossington 2-1 winners at Harrogate Railway Athletic, Joshua Yeaman and Myron Gibbons putting them into a two-goal lead before Kieran Greenaway halved the deficit with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.

Brigg needed to come from behind twice at home to Parkgate, Reece Newell and Joshua Batty restoring parity after Brandon Bagley and Elliott Simpson had given the visiting Steelmen the lead, as the game ended at 2-2 and it was the hosts who went through 4-1 on spot kicks.

Fourteen of the round's sixteen ties took place with six Division One sides unable to upset the form book against Premier Division opposition.

Hall Road Rangers came the closest as only an injury-time penalty from Lewis Collins snatched visitors Grimsby Borough a 3-3 draw and the top-flight leaders then progressed 5-4 in the shoot-out.

The Division One hosts had raced into a three-goal lead, Reece Moody's penalty added to by strikes from Bailey Smith and David Harrison by the 25th minute.

But, Thomas Hipwell brought Borough back into it before the break, Adam Drury then got their second on the hour and that is how it stayed until the Wilderness Boys' dramatic equaliser.

Clipstone were beaten 3-0 at home by Albion Sports, Jaydan Sandhu, Jamal Stewart and Camen Bhandal with the Lions' goals, whilst Nostell Miners Welfare went down 5-1 at Garforth Town.

Joseph Colley grabbed a couple for the hosts with Aaron Pilkington, Hass Gorji and Kevin Terhaerdt also netting for them, and Nostell's top scorer Anees Younis grabbed a consolation.

A penalty from Jack Appleyard was not enough for Swallownest to cause an upset as it was sandwiched by goals from Kane Reece and Mitchell Dunne for visitors Handsworth who took home a 2-1 victory.

Thackley were 3-0 winners at Armthorpe Welfare, Albert Ibrahimi's double adding to an opening own goal from Charlie Shelley whilst Jordan Coduri struck twice in Penistone Church's 3-1 defeat of hosts Ollerton Town.

Harry Holland had put the home side ahead but that was cancelled out by Kieran Ryan before Coduri secured passage for their higher ranked opponents.

The remaining six ties played were all-Premier Division affairs with two going to penalty shoot-outs.

Winterton Rangers won 4-3 on spot-kicks after a goalless game at Emley AFC whilst AFC Mansfield also went through 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Goole AFC.

The Bulls took an early second-half lead at the Vikings through Mark Dudley but quickfire goals from Joshua Dacre and Dylan Collington gave the home side a 2-1 advantage going into the last ten minutes.

Thomas Cropper, though, netted as the game edged towards injury time to salvage the game for the visitors who took full advantage of their late fortune.

Nathan Jarman scored the only goal of the game as Barton Town went through at the expense of their visitors Silsden AFC whilst Jamie York grabbed the winner for Sherwood Colliery in a 2-1 victory at Eccleshill United.

Steven Jeff was the matchwinner as Hemsworth Miners Welfare left Bottesford Town with success by the same scoreline, and Tomas Poole and Declan Howe were the scorers in Staveley Miners Welfare's 2-0 home defeat of Athersley Recreation.

Maltby Main and North Ferriby will meet each other again next week after their tie was abandoned with barely two minutes on the clock due to floodlight failure.

And, Knaresborough Town's county cup game at Brighouse Town on Monday night was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and the West Riding County Cup First Round tie will now take place later in the month.
