Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2021/22 #60

24th March, 2022

Grimsby Borough's hopes of a league and cup double are still on after a penalty shoot-out win at Sherwood Colliery in the Toolstation NCEL League Cup Quarter Finals in midweek.

James Petronzio's spot kick had brought them back level midway through the second half after Timothy Gregory had given the home side an eighth minute lead.

The match finished 1-1 and Borough then progressed to the final four with a 5-4 win on penalties.

They have been joined by Staveley Miners Welfare who defeated the only Division One side left in the competition, Rossington Main, at Oxford Street.

Declan Howe got both of the Trojans' goals on his return to his former club, a 24th minute opener added to with a penalty in stoppage time to seal the tie.

The race for second place in the Premier Division continued to gather pace with Eccleshill United moving up into that position with a 2-0 home win over Bottesford Town on Tuesday.

Ben Bodle and Luke Aldrich got the goals as the Eagles got the three points that put them temporarily in the possible promotion spot before they were replaced 24 hours later by Winterton Rangers.

A Josh Walker hat-trick extended his lead at the top of the goalscorers chart, his tally in all competitions now 39, whilst Ryan Thompson netted twice and Lee Ridley also got on the scoresheet in Rangers' eleventh straight win, a 6-0 victory over visitors Silsden AFC.

It now means only two points separate Winterton and fifth-placed Garforth Town whilst Penistone Church will still fancy their chances, three points further back in sixth.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare moved out of the relegation zone with a 5-1 home win over confirmed basement side Athersley Recreation.

Nash Connolly's double came after a goal each for Steven Jeff, Charlie Barks and Declan Dawson to move Welfare above Albion Sports who were beaten 2-0 at home by Barton Town.

Thomas Waudby and Scott Matthews secured the points for Barton who tighten their grip on seventh whilst Sports are now a point off safety but with three games in hand of Hemsworth.

In Division One, North Ferriby's 3-2 home victory over Glasshoughton Welfare moves them to within three points of leaders Hallam in the race for the title.

The Villagers were made to work for the win with Daniel East's double sandwiching a Thomas Corner strike whilst Kyle Fish and Lewis Stephens scored for the visitors who stay fifteenth.

Brigg Town and Harrogate Railway Athletic are now a point away from confirming their play-off place in third and fourth, Scott Phillips getting the only goal of the game in Brigg's home win over Retford FC whose own ambitions were dealt a blow.

And, the Rail took the lead through a Daniel Thirkell penalty in a 1-1 draw at Nostell Miners Welfare, Brett Smith with the equaliser towards the end of the first half.

Selby Town are now just four points off the play-offs after a Liam Flanagan hat-trick helped them to a 4-1 home victory over Ollerton Town whilst Parkgate won 8-1 at relegation-threatened Clipstone to climb to seventh.

Brandon Bagley got a couple of goals for the Steelmen as they look to continue their late charge up the table whilst the Cobras are now six points from safety in the bottom three.

That is because Swallownest claimed a massive victory to ease their relegation worries, Jack Haslam with both of their goals in a 2-0 win at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic to give them more breathing space from the drop zone.

FC Humber United stay next-to-bottom after a couple of late goals condemned them to a 2-1 loss at Rainworth Miners Welfare, Morgan Boyle with both for the Wrens after Brandon Burke's opener for the visitors.

And, Teversal were confirmed bottom with a 1-0 home defeat to neighbours Shirebrook Town, Keiron Sykes-Tobin with the decider with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.
