Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2021/22 #61

27th March, 2022

Congratulations to Grimsby Borough who were crowned Toolstation NCEL Premier Division champions after Saturday's 3-0 home victory over Maltby Main.

The Wilderness Boys, who have been top of the table for all but seven days since the start of September, needed just a point to secure the title with two games remaining but they took all three to spark massive celebrations at the Bradley Football Development Centre.

Jack Debnam opened the scoring early in the second half with Adam Drury doubling their advantage near the hour mark before Debnam's second with five minutes remaining notched up Borough's fifteenth home win of the season.

And, as champions, it means they will move up into Step 4 football next season after fourteen years with the NCEL and we wish them all the best at their new level.

The chase to see who could possibly join them is now down to four teams with Winterton Rangers currently holding onto the coveted second spot.

Josh Walker's 40th goal in an incredible season for him secured them a twelfth straight victory, 1-0 at home to AFC Mansfield.

Eccleshill United remain behind them in third on goal difference after a 2-0 win at Sherwood Colliery, Talent Ndlovu and Aiden Day netting at either end of the match to deal a blow to their hosts' own promotion hopes.

Colliery drop to fifth, four points behind Winterton with three games to play, replaced in fourth by Garforth Town who drew 1-1 at home with sixth-placed Penistone Church.

Edward Newsome scored in the 89th minute to give Church a dramatic lead but they could not hold on to it as James Burgess levelled in injury time for the Miners and the result means Penistone's promotion bid has mathematically come to an end.

In the race to avoid the drop, Albion Sports have moved out of the bottom two after Oliver Russon and Mohammed Qasim scored in their 2-1 victory at Goole AFC, Joshua Schofield with a late consolation for the Vikings.

Elsewhere, Jack Normanton's brace claimed a 2-0 win for Silsden AFC at Emley AFC that moves his side up into twelfth whilst there were home victories for Bottesford Town and Staveley Miners Welfare.

Luke Ayris got the only goal as Bottesford defeated Barton Town and two late strikes from Declan Howe helped Staveley to a 3-0 win over basement side Athersley Recreation.

And, it was honours even as Danny Edwards' 80th minute equaliser for Knaresborough Town cancelled out a first half goal from Lewis Waddington in a 1-1 draw at Thackley.

The top six all won in Division One meaning the title challenge continues for Hallam and North Ferriby whilst Brigg Town and Harrogate Railway Athletic confirmed their play-off places.

Liam Royles scored twice whilst there were also goals for Bradley Morton, Jack Brownell and Iren Wilson as Hallam kept their three point lead at the summit with a 5-1 victory at Armthorpe Welfare.

Ferriby were 3-0 winners at Clipstone, Josh Whiteley with a hat-trick for the Villagers to keep the pressure on the table-topping Countrymen.

There was a 3-0 home victory for Brigg against Parkgate, Joshua Batty's opener added to by a Dayle Hutson double, and second-half strikes from Kieran Greenaway and Marcus Day ensured a 2-1 win for Harrogate at relegation-threatened FC Humber United.

Rossington Main keep themselves four points clear in the final play-off spot after Paul Sherburn's goal in a 1-0 home win over Dronfield Town.

Selby Town continue to breathe down Main's neck in sixth after the Robins came from two goals down to win 5-2 at bottom side Teversal, Harry Clapham and Calum Ward grabbing two each for the visitors.

There were 2-2 draws for Ollerton Town at Nostell Miners Welfare and Rainworth Miners Welfare at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

And, there were home wins for Hall Road Rangers and Shirebrook Town who beat Swallownest 2-1 and Glasshoughton Welfare 1-0, respectively.
